This lacquer box features a dramatic and atmospheric maritime scene, exquisitely hand-painted with meticulous detail and rich, moody tones. At the heart of the composition is a ship caught in the throes of a violent sea storm, its mast broken and leaning precariously amidst towering greenish-blue waves. The surging ocean is rendered with dynamic brushwork that captures the chaos and power of nature.
In the background, a glowing golden sun—or possibly a full moon—emerges through a dense, cloudy sky, casting a shimmering path of light across the stormy water. The contrast between the warm, ethereal light and the dark, tumultuous sea creates a striking sense of drama and depth. A lone seabird flies through the sky, adding a subtle touch of life and movement to the desolate scene.
The box itself is bordered in black lacquer, giving it a refined frame that enhances the painting’s visual impact. The sides and bottom are black with a thin gold border near the bottom. There appears to be a signature in black at the bottom left corner of painting, but it is illegible. Probably done in the 70s or 80s, the lacquer has thinned over the years and there is light grainy texture (visible somewhat in photo), but no significant cracks or flaws. Still very nice.
