This exquisite hand-painted lacquer box draws its inspiration from the beloved Russian fairy tale The Scarlet Flower, a tale reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast. The composition captures a moment from the story with vivid artistry and symbolic detail.
At the forefront is the merchant’s youngest daughter, Nastenka, portrayed with flowing auburn hair and a serene, knowing gaze. She holds the enchanted scarlet flower delicately in her hand—a token of both sacrifice and love. Her white blouse and golden earrings speak to her purity and inner nobility.
Behind her, a richly dressed sister in a shimmering green robe admires herself in a golden mirror, highlighting the contrast between vanity and Nastenka’s selflessness. Looming above them, another sister, adorned in an elaborate kokoshnik headdress, draws back a curtain with theatrical flair—perhaps unveiling the magical world that awaits Nastenka at the Beast’s palace.
The box itself is a deep, marbled mahogany red, its curved, organic form enhancing the dreamlike quality of the scene. Gilded and silver details dance along the borders in swirling patterns, echoing the elegance and enchantment of Russian lacquer art.
The box, made out of high quality papier mache, sits on a similar color base where the name of the artist, the village where it was done, and the year of completion are written. The lacquer box not only serves as a beautiful decorative piece but also as a visual storytelling artifact, capturing the heart of a fairy tale where love transforms, and beauty is found within.
