Artist: Vera Smirnova
Medium: Acrylic on board
Size: 20" x 22"
In this powerful tribute, artist Vera Smirnova presents a dignified portrait of Frederick Douglass seated with pen, scroll, and open book—symbols of his enduring legacy as a writer, orator, and abolitionist. Behind him, scenes from the struggle for freedom are rendered in muted tones: the brutality of slavery, resistance, escape, and the fight for emancipation. The top of the composition is crowned with American flags and a laurel wreath bearing Douglass’s name and lifespan (1818–1895), a mark of honor befitting his role in reshaping the conscience of a nation.
Smirnova blends historical reverence with narrative depth, allowing the background imagery to contextualize Douglass’s central, resolute figure. His expression is one of unwavering resolve, commanding attention and respect.
Note: The slight lightness in the lower left corner is from the glare in the lighting and is not part of the artwork itself.
